He belongs to Darren Vaughn and is a handful at 5 months. He loves water especially when there is something to retrieve, like a quail killed during training. We've just now started working him on blinds. Levi will be finding dove for his owner in September and ducks in November. His training will continue on after hunting season. Here I've dropped a quail, that he had been retrieving and was now waterlogged, into the duckweed in about 1 foot of water. In the first photo he smells it and the second he is underwater after it. We kill a lot of wood ducks and they are notorious for going under and holding onto roots when pursued by a dog. This teaches the pup to believe in his nose.

07-08 Hunts

Magnun the Lewellyn Setter

While we raise and train pointing labs we are always appreciative of a any bird dog that has that little something that sets them apart from the rest of the pack. We had bred Red to his female, Gypsy Flash Kalich, who is the granddaughter of Bodacious Bo Denson, who is the black pointing lab that we guided with on the Chocolate Bay Rod and Gun Club. Toby looks and acts a lot like Bo. The owners of Toby could no longer put up with his destructive ways and returned him with papers to Brian in October of 07 and we took possession of him November of 07. This picture was taken in May of 08. Toby not only points but will flush and retrieve the bird after it is shot. At the present time Toby is working on his remote sit to whistle and handling to the downed bird. I have no doubt that he will be a welcomed addition to our hunting team. It just shows you what can be done with a lot of love and a little patience. I hope his previous owners read this blog and will be happy knowing that Toby will reach his full potential and will bring elation to a lot of hunters.

Ed

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qLnBlFTHUjA/SC7rOnmmXJI/AAAAAAAAAIE/VjJdduR8_tw/s320/HPIM0104.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5201353256041077906" />
Ed is a Pointer that came from Top Flight game birds. I was hunting with Brian Kalich and we were on a knoll above one of the beaver ponds that I hunt. The ducks would fly over the beaver pond, see the decoys and come in through the trees. We were shooting them as they dropped below the trees on their approach into our decoys. We were waiting on some ducks to swing back when all of sudden one comes in from the other direction and Brian drops him about 6 inches off the water. At his shot one of my new gadwall decoys rocked back from the force of the shot. I swear I saw the shot wad bounce off that decoy. I looked at him and said " you killed one of my new decoys." To which he responded " yeah, but I killed that duck too." And sure enough there was a gadwall floating in the decoys. I thought about using sealant and sealing up the holes but there must be a hundred pellets in it that it would sound like a babies rattle amoung the decoys. Besides I get way too much mileage off from Brian with it.

Red Afield

Red pointing a bird in the brush, waiting on his release command to go in and flush and if the hunter is up on his game, the retrieve.

LPK Upland Hunt

These guys shot quail, pheasants and chukar. You have to drive a mile in 4 WD low range, launch the pi rouges and paddle 1/2 mile upstream to get to it. I went into it with Brian Kalick of Brian's Taxidermy in Tomball, Texas and we shot two limits in 30 minutes. It is a great place to hunt but a pain to get into. That is why the ducks like it so. There were ducks on this pond when I took this picture. I didn't want to get closer so as not to spook them before season opened again.

Quail and Pheasants

These gentlemen took a morning off from the drilling rig to hunt for some quail and pheasants over Red and Nikki. For persons who have not hunted with LPK, we release half of your birds into our fields, hunt them until the action slows, return to the vehicles and while the hunters are getting more bullets and something to drink we release your other birds into the field and then hunt them down. We hunted the gentleman, Rob, and his son, Jordan, who were putting on the hunt. They wanted Red in this picture. The hunt was on Saturday and we returned to LPK on Sunday. Monday morning we received a call from Rob letting us know how much they appreciated the work that we had done and to let me know that Red had made a couple of friends for life and that they were looking forward to making the trip from Waco to East Texas to hunt over Red again. We had pi rouged into this area amoung the cypress trees into a hole that was covered with duck weed. We had several wood ducks into the decoys before shooting time so it was looking good for being a good hunt. Right at shooting time this drake dropped in and I dropped him. Red made the retrieve, it was such a beautiful morning that I decided to try out my new digital camera, and I posed the duck at his feet. I set up to take the picture and just as I was getting ready to take this picture a flight of woodies hit the water about 20 yards out and had Reds undivided attention. I hit the button at the same instant and the flash went off, I wasn't expecting that, Red didn't know what was happening and the ducks weren't hanging around to find out. What happened was to capture a moment in time that is priceless to a duck hunter.
